I was watching an episode of this show from the first season
Context:
the starting QB for the team got injured so the next in line guy had to step up. He was very hard working for that week, respectful, everything. white
but a guy named voodoo tatum just joined the school cuz he lost his home to katrina. He was black, dark as the midnight hour. he was rude to the coach, didn’t give a shit about anyone on the team, BUT was a great QB
The story line basically—> they started Voodoo Tatum, he was an asshole, did his own thing, coach got pissed and put in the other guy. the other guy won the game.
Watching this was uncomfortable for me. they made Voodoo tatum look like a bad guy. and the other guy was a hero.
Now I’m not saying that the other guy didn’t work hard, and didn’t have a hard life. But Voodoo lost his home. and honestly, looks like he came from inner-city New orleans. They just made Voodoo look like a terrible terrible person. not hard working all that. and worst of all, he’s like the darkest person in the world.
I know if i had just lost everything to katrina, id be pretty fucked up mentally, not to mention the already competitive/tensional nature of people in poverty. and my friends think voodoo is an asshole, when they don’t understand why he’s that way.
i don’t think its necessarily racist, just not completely right, influencing people one way without showing a full picture.
or am i just crazy? maybe I’ve been looking so much into race the last half a year that I can’t watch basic tv anymore? what is it?
