theres a paragraph in this book I’m reading called disintegration by Eugene Robinson
its about black america, and he was talking about the movie precious:
” But still: What is it with the idea that black plus poor equals not just privation, not just dysfunctional, but a pattern of behavior that can only be described as subhuman? What is it that audiences find so compelling about the Grand Guignol depictions of AFrican American poverty? Is it some urge being satisfied, some itch being scratched? Is it some preconceived notion being confirmed?
Or is it guilt being assuaged? Is society saying, in effect: Yes, we have turned our backs. Yes, we have left you adrift, knowing that many of you will drown. But look how you behave. Look how you are really are. You deserve it.”
when i read this i was like DAMNNNNN, he just called everyone out
his point was that this story was a uniquely “Abandoned” African-AMerican story, abandoned as a classification to blacks in inner-cities in poverty, with single mother, work low class jobs, whereas “mainstream” blacks are those who have moved out and become middle class. THis story was not a “universal” story. for such reason, movie critics and most of society liked the movie, and african americans did not.
what do you think of the you deserve it comment?
